Do I Qualify: Ohio

Qualifying for Medical Marijuana in Ohio

Ohio’s medical marijuana program has specific guidelines designed to ensure that patients receive safe and effective care. Understanding these rules is essential for anyone considering medical marijuana as a treatment option in Ohio.

Qualifying Medical Conditions

Defined Conditions:
Ohio has established a specific list of qualifying medical conditions for medical marijuana use. This list includes, but is not limited to, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, chronic pain, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy or another seizure disorder, fibromyalgia, glaucoma, hepatitis C, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, sickle cell anemia, spinal cord disease or injury, Tourette’s syndrome, traumatic brain injury, and ulcerative colitis.
Review and Expansion:
The list of conditions is periodically reviewed, and additional conditions may be added based on the approval by the Ohio Medical Board.

01

Certification from a Licensed Physician

Certified Physicians:
To qualify, patients must have a certification from a physician who is licensed to practice in Ohio and has been certified to recommend medical marijuana by the State Medical Board.
Patient-Physician Relationship:
The patient must have a bona fide physician patient relationship with the recommending doctor, which includes a thorough medical examination and review of medical history.

02

Patient Registration

Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (OMMCP) Registration:
After receiving a physician’s recommendation, patients must register with the OMMCP.
Registration Fee:
There is a registration fee for patients and caregivers. Reduced fees are available for qualifying patients, such as veterans and individuals on federal assistance programs.

03

Possession and Use

Purchase and Possession Limits:
Registered patients are allowed to purchase and possess a specified amount of medical marijuana, which is determined by the state’s Board of Pharmacy.
Approved Forms of Consumption:
Ohio allows several forms of medical marijuana, including oils, tinctures, plant material, edibles, and patches. Smoking cannabis is prohibited, but vaporization of dry herb is permitted.

Minor Patients and Caregivers

Minors:
Patients under the age of 18 require a caregiver to register and obtain medical marijuana on their behalf.
Caregiver Registration:
Caregivers must also register with the OMMCP and are subject to a background check.
